Rangers' ground at Ibrox has been named as the venue for the seven-a-side rugby tournament if Glasgow wins the right to stage the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Glasgow's proposals will be officially lodged with the Commonwealth Games Federation at a ceremony in London on Wednesday.

The team behind the bid find out in November if they have beaten the Nigerian city of Abuja to host the games.

If successful, Scotland's national football stadium Hampden Park is to be transformed into an athletics arena as part of the city's £288million plans to host the sporting event.

A platform will be installed above the ground to make the venue both long and wide enough for track and field events.

It has also emerged Parkhead, the home of Celtic, would host the opening ceremony.

Representatives from the rival Abuja team will also be at the handover at the Langham Hotel on Wednesday.

Abuja, a city of 1.4million residents, plans to expand to four million by 2014 and aspires to become Africa's sporting and tourism capital.

The final vote will be taken by the Commonwealth Games Federation's 71 member nations at their General Assembly in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on November 9.
