ok,
the popup box is basically telling you to plug the phone directly into the pc usb port, be it a hub or direct , and not into the box
some pc's power output on usb is not strong enough so it may be difficult to connect correctly to the phone if you plug phone cable into ubl box itself.
as for 98, keep away from it with anything usb as 98 struggles to recognise and install drivers for the phones

the software cant see the phone in boot mode cuss the drivers arnt installled for the phone when connected in this mode
close all software down
reboot pc
dont run soft yet
turn on phone in boot mode and connect it to pc
if windows asks for drivers let it auto search
if it doesnt goto start button/control panel/system/hardare/device manager
look for any yellow question marks and select update driver
then let it auto find them

remember...first time you connect a different model like l7, or v3x, u6 etc..you will need to install drivers for it
so best to connect phone in normal mode and install drivers
then connect it in boot mode and install drivers
do this before running moto software and make sure drivers are installed first before unlocking
the next time you connect an l6, it will load drivers automatically now, because windows knows what it is because you have just told it so above
so only have to do this once per handset.
also a tip for you
some phones settings in normal mode can be set to look at memory card rather than phone so put a working sim in that it will accept, goto connection and change to data/fax rather than memory card, then install drivers
you get this with l7,v3x...any phone that takes a memory card...now and then...depends if owner has messed with settings before giving it to you to be unlocked
