Are the new Premiership TV packages good for fans?
After the EU, in its wisdom, decided that one broadcaster could not show all Premiership football new tenders were sought and today the packages were announced:
Package A: 23 matches shown at 1600 on Sunday
Package B: 23 matches shown at 1330 on Sunday
Package C: minimum of 12 matches at 2000 on Monday, the rest either at 1330 on Sunday or 1715 on Saturday or other times
Package D: minimum of 18 matches at 1715 on Saturday, the rest either at 1330 on Sunday, 2000 on Monday or other times
Package E: 23 matches shown at 1245 on Saturday
Package F: seven to 13 matches on midweek evenings/bank holidays, 10 to 16 at 1245 on Saturday and 1600 on Sunday
Sky have won packages A, B, E and F. Setanta Sports get packages C and D.
The number of games has increased to 138 and the deal begins for the 2007-8 season. However, what it will mean is that as well as Sky subscription a further subscription to Setanta Sports will be needed. As Setanta is carried on the Sky Digital network there won’t be any need for extra equipment.
Will it make a difference? Is the competition good for football fans or just good for the clubs who are now going to make even more television money?

Understandably Sir Alex Ferguson was angry at the England manager’s comments that he would be taking Wayne Rooney to the World Cup whether he was fit or not.
Sven’s only concern is England and he wants their best player to be there but that is, not for the first time, paying scant concern to the needs of the club which pays the player’s wages. I have no doubt Sven would play a 60% fit Rooney and hope that he doesn’t suffer any setbacks. If he does it’s a blow for England but he has other players to choose from and his gamble won’t have cost him that much.
For Manchester United however it would mean their top player faces another period out of the game, albeit in the close season, more rehab and another battle to get fit.
